baratang

mangroves, mud volcanoes, and caves you reach by dinghy.

Baratang is the day trip that feels like crossing into another country. From Port Blair you drive through Jarawa reserve forest — a restricted road where convoys run on schedule — then emerge into a landscape of mangrove creeks, limestone caves, and one of the only active mud volcanoes in India.

The limestone caves at Nayadera are the centrepiece: a short trek through forest, then a dinghy ride through a narrow mangrove channel to the cave mouth. Inside, stalactites and stalagmites lit by torchlight — raw, damp, and unlike anything else in the archipelago.

The mud volcanoes are smaller than you'd expect but genuinely strange — grey mounds bubbling and belching from underground gas. Parrot Island at dusk is the bonus: thousands of parrots returning to roost in the mangroves, the sky darkening with wings. It's a long day. Leave Port Blair by 4 AM and you'll be back by 7 PM.
